Web hosting companies usually offer their users with 2 types of operating system to choose from: the Linux based hosting and the Windows based hosting. There are many users out there that are not technical enough to know the difference between the two. We shall make a brief comparison between these two operating systems: * Server Accees : With Linux, you are able to gain access to the server via the terminal with telnet or ssh access while you won’t be able to do that with Windows. Both OS comes with FTP access. * Cost : Linux is an open source program while Windows, as most of you would know, requires a paid license. * Ease of Move : It is easier to move a site hosted on a Linux OS to a Windows based hosting service than moving one from Windows to a Linux hosting service. * Security : Linux is known to be more secure than a Windows based hosting service. * Database : Linux commonly supports MySQL. So does Windows, but Windows also support ODBC, SQL Server and also Oracle. * Client Side Script : Both operating systems support HTML and Javascript. * Server Side Script : Both operating system support PHP but it is more commonly used in Linux based hosting. Windows also supports ASP technologies.
